Opinion: Bill banning animal antibiotics is "misguided at best"

Contrary to a recent commentary by Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., claiming that antibiotics are overused in livestock production, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri says farmers are careful with their administration of antibiotics to ensure the health of their animals and prevent diseases. Luetkemeyer says the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, which was authored by Slaughter, is "misguided at best and harmful to animal and public health at worst." Various veterinarian and animal groups, including AVMA, are opposing the bill, Luetkemeyer writes.
