Groups urge Congress to preserve federal support for housing

As lawmakers consider an overhaul of the housing-finance sector, civil rights leaders, real estate agents, homebuilders and bankers are striving to urge Congress to keep the government support for housing. Later this month, the National Fair Housing Alliance will gather with The Financial Services Roundtable, the think tank Center for American Progress and others to look into their common areas of interest, including the mortgage guarantee. "Eliminating the government role in the secondary market is not the fix anybody is looking for," said Deborah Goldberg, who is leading the alliance's effort.
