REITs climbed in January, besting the larger market, reports Brad Case, senior vice president of research and industry information for NAREIT. The FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index rose almost 6.5% for the month, beating the Standard & Poor's 500 index by 2 percentage points. "One of the big differences between REITs and the total returns of the broader stock market is that so much of REIT returns come from dividends," Case said. "Investors are looking for dividend yields and investments that will provide them with the income they need to pay their expenses. Certainly, investors are very happy with the dividends they get from their REIT investments."
