FINRA to gather data on "dark pools," alternative trading systems

The Securities and Exchange Commission has directed the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority to watch over stock transactions that take place outside of public exchanges. An estimated 40% of stock-trading activity occurs on private trading venues, or "dark pools," and other alternative trading systems, and none of that information is widely available publicly.
