Rising global demand buoys UK factories

UK manufacturers got the year off to a strong start as rising demand from North America, mainland Europe, Asia, Brazil, Scandinavia and the Middle East sent growth in new export orders to a three-year high, according to the Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing purchasing managers' index. While the output expansion has slowed recently, "growth is still tracking at one of the highest rates in the 22-year survey history," said senior economist Rob Dobson.
