EU commissioner calls on member states to lift GM foods moratorium

David Byrne, European Union commissioner for health and consumer safety, warned European governments to "end their foot-dragging over approval of new genetically modified crops" to prevent a World Trade Organization case. Byrne also said a U.S. case against Europe could increase European "hostility" to biotech foods. Byrne also said member states have been timid about lifting the moratorium, and should do more to improve consumer confidence in the safety of biotech foods.
