AAR president sees improving freight volumes

After the latest weekly report showed a modest gain in freight traffic on U.S. railroads, Edward Hamberger, president and chief executive of the Association of American Railroads, predicted that volumes will continue to improve. "There is cautious optimism that we have bottomed out," he said. "Things are starting to pick up a little bit, but the concern is will that end when inventory restocking ends or will it be real?" Rail traffic rose by 3.9% in the week ended Jan. 23.
