ECB's Trichet defends euro, "solidity" of euro zone

Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, defended the region's common currency as concerns mounted about the ability of some European nations to get their public finances under control. Fears are spreading through financial markets about Greece, Portugal and Spain as costs of insuring their sovereign debt against default increase. The situation has put downward pressures on the euro.
