New San Francisco Bay Bridge taking shape

The $6.3 billion replacement of the San Francisco Bay Bridge's eastern span received its first permanent piece on Wednesday, when a 90-foot-by-84-foot deck section was hoisted into place. Twenty-seven more sections will be added eventually. The new span between Oakland and Yerba Buena Island is to be completed in 2013 or 2014 and will be the largest self-anchored suspension bridge in the world.
