Plans to develop a mixed-use project in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., involve relocating an 80-year-old, six-story rain tree. Developer Asi Cymbal hired Environmental Design from Houston to move the tree, which would involve months of preparation and the use of metal pipes and I-beams to support the roots. Environmental Design CEO Tom Cox said 98% of the trees they transplant survive, but opponents of the project want the rain tree to stay in place. The city will decide this spring which side wins.
