Medicare payers use pre-pay audits to look for billing errors

Medicare auditors are targeting primary care physicians and specialists for prepayment audits of high-intensity patient office visits to look for billing errors. AAFP president-elect Reid Blackwelder, M.D., said these reviews create an additional administrative burden, lead to undercoding to avoid raising a red flag and could cause physicians to send more complex patient cases to a hospital emergency department.
