Hospitals borrow ideas from malls to help patients find their way

In an effort to address design problems, U.S. hospitals are adopting jargon-free signage for certain departments, installing digital kiosks to help patients better navigate facilities and employing other strategies borrowed from airports and shopping malls. Prominent landmarks such as pieces of art help patients navigate winding corridors, college interns redirect the lost and universal symbols stand in for words to reach a multilingual population.
