Pediatric plastic surgeon helps children with microtia

Pediatric plastic surgeon Sheryl Lewin has performed more than 800 surgeries on children with microtia and founded a nonprofit to provide surgical care, as well as education, research and advocacy about the congenital condition, which causes the ears to develop incorrectly. Lewin says microtia surgery is among the most difficult and most rewarding procedures. She uses a porous scaffold that allows patients' own tissue, a thin layer of which is taken from under the scalp for use in the procedure, to grow and cover the scaffold.
