Bank of England cuts interest rate to lowest level ever

The Bank of England cuts its benchmark interest rate half of a percentage point, to 1%. The rate is now at its lowest level since the bank was founded in 1694. "The global economy is in the throes of a severe and synchronized downturn," the central bank said in a statement.
