The unemployment rate fell to 9.7% last month from an unrevised 10% in December, but new data show there were more job losses in 2009 than previously reported. Payrolls outside farming decreased by 20,000 compared with a revised 150,000 decline in December even though payrolls were supposed to be flat. The December data were revised down from an original 85,000 drop. The construction, transportation and warehouse industries all saw losses. Meanwhile, the retail sector and temporary services added jobs in January.
