Proposed immigration reform could benefit organized labor

Efforts to overhaul the country's immigration law are welcomed by unions, who believe their membership could get a boost. Fears of deportation have discouraged undocumented workers from joining unions, but immigration reform could change that. The Service Employees International Union plans to express its support to lawmakers, while AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and other union leaders plan to convene with President Barack Obama to discuss immigration.
