Regulators and consumers' concerns over new trading technologies such as high-frequency trading systems are misplaced, says Direct Edge Holdings CEO William O'Brien. While some mistakes are inevitable, new technologies generally make markets stronger and more efficient, O'Brien explains. "The best-developed algorithms really understand how markets and regulation and technology combine," he says. "It's simply the automation of a decision-making process. Still human-driven, but machine implemented."
