Cingular applies for patent on emoticon insertion method

Cingular Wireless is seeking a patent for its method of allowing subscribers to insert emoticons such as smiley faces into text messages. The application could pit Cingular against Microsoft, which is seeking a patent for its "methods and devices for creating and transferring custom emoticons."
