FDA budget increase targets food, drug safety

President George W. Bush's proposed budget includes $2.1 billion for the FDA -- 5.3% more than requested last year -- with more funds going to food safety initiatives and generic drug reviews. The FDA said drug safety programs need $11.2 million more to hire additional staff, support a pilot program reviewing safety profiles of new drugs and develop an electronic drug safety tracking program.
