Consolidation and a concerted effort to maintain operational discipline has greatly helped the airline industry's performance, in contrast to that of the hotel segment, whose problems have led to decreased revenue, Arnie Weissmann writes. Hotels' costly relationships with online travel agencies continue to be one of their greatest sources of difficulty. Flash sites and the new BackBid.com also encourage hotels to draw guests through price drops, undercutting revenue.
