How rigorous are New York state tests?

As New York state moves toward statewide high-school graduation exams, journalist Michael Winerip questions the rigor of the new tests. To graduate, New York state students must now earn at least a 65 on state tests in each of five subjects, including English. Winerip, however, suggests the English test has been watered down to the point that it holds little meaning, which has officials considering increasing the passing score to 75.
