Ill. fourth-grader steps into mayor's role for a day

The "paragraph of the day" writing assignment for school turned into much more for 9-year-old Tom Cavanaugh, a student at Roosevelt Elementary School in Park Ridge, Ill. The boy's father e-mailed the assignment -- about a pizza-tasting competition -- to the mayor, David Schmidt, who invited the boy to serve as "acting mayor" at Monday's city council meeting. The student was allowed to call the meeting to order, lead the Pledge of Allegiance and help Schmidt with proclamations. "It's great," said Tom's father, Joe Cavanaugh. "He's always had an appetite for politics."
