Petroleum products, coal topped freight rail carloads in 2012

Coal accounted for 41% of total freight rail carloads last year, while petroleum products and crude oil shipments accounted for more than 30%, according to the Energy Information Administration. AAR reports that 170,000 carloads of petroleum products were shipped in 2012, a 46% increase from 2011.
