Troy the Doberman pinscher is the ninth-ranked of his breed in the nation, but his owner has given the dog another title: hero. As a puppy, Troy detected a malignant breast mass in his owner, which was diagnosed as an aggressive stage II tumor but successfully treated. Dogs' sense of smell is as much as 100,000 times as sensitive as that of humans, a characteristic that scientists are using to help detect markers of disease.
