Engineering permeates our world, civilizations across time

A world without engineering would be hard to imagine, as the field extends back in time beyond Rome's aqueducts and the Egyptian pyramids, writes engineer Jenny Ann Beswick. Today, the fields we conceive as embodying engineering are only "a distillation of a basic concept that has fueled civilization itself," Beswick says. She calls for a campaign to "revive engineering" by defining new frontiers, seeking greater challenges, increasing investments in the sciences and inspiring those in the field.
