Pa. elementary school teaches, mentors students in after-school programs

Barrett Elementary School in Homestead, Pa., is building community partnerships to offer a range of after-school activities that include dance classes, tutoring for reading, video-game clubs and mentoring programs. During a 10-week rotation in the Strong Women Strong Girls program, girls play social games with mentors to become empowered young women, said Megan Thornberg, a mentor and college student. "A lot of them open up," Thornberg said. "Some of them are way more talkative at the end."
