S.C. lawmakers consider merger to create Charleston University

South Carolina lawmakers are considering a measure that would merge the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina, including the Medical University Hospital Authority. If the measure is passed, a new entity, called Charleston University, would be created by July 2016. The majority of faculty at the College of Charleston oppose the measure, saying the schools serve different populations. "They have very different kinds of missions. Their cultures are very different," Lynn Cherry, speaker of the faculty at the college, said.
