U.S. economic data deliver mixed message

A new batch of indicators for the U.S. economy painted a mixed picture. December exports were down, but U.S. unemployment claims last week pointed to an improved labor market, with fewer than expected filing for benefits. Productivity was up a strong 3.2% in the fourth quarter, indicating employers were squeezing more work out of current employees amid reluctance to take on new hires.
