Report looks at how hospitals will divvy up ACO payments

Many hospitals will continue to use fee-for-service payments as accountable care organizations begin so they can determine proportionate provider reimbursement in a global payment system, according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine. Primary care physician practices will have the biggest burden in implementing ACOs because they will need to add resources and additional staff to manage patient populations and coordinate care, the report said.
