Exhibit documents plastic surgery's evolution

Plastic surgery evolved as a discipline after World War I, in which Armenian-American dentist Varaztad Kazanjian worked at a military hospital in France, repairing faces shattered in battle. After the war, Kazanjian developed new ways to treat facial injuries and deformities as the first professor of plastic surgery at Harvard Medical School. An exhibit opening in 2017 at the National Library of Medicine will document patients and doctors' experiences at military hospitals during World War I.
