Google looks to untether Chrome Web apps from browser

Google is working on code to make Chrome Web applications run for the most part without Chrome as if they were native applications. The project, dubbed "app_shell," is aimed at allowing developers to create high-speed cross-platform apps that use Chrome extension application programming interfaces without needing the browser.
