Tunnel-boring machine working on Highway 99 project in Wash. remains inactive

The Washington State Department of Transportation, Seattle Tunnel Partners and drill manufacturer Hitachi-Zosen are working to figure out what is preventing the tunnel-boring machine at work on the Highway 99 project in Seattle from moving forward. It has been two months since excavation work was halted. The machine, known as Bertha, advanced four feet last week during test runs, but it also overheated.
