Arizona lawmakers weigh expansion of merit-pay program

Some Arizona legislators want to expand statewide a performance-pay plan available only to a select number of districts. One of the 209 excluded districts has sued the state because the participating 28 districts are eligible to receive millions of dollars in extra state funding each year; the superintendent for the district that brought suit over the funding disparity said it would not pursue the case if the expansion is made law, but some fear the anticipated $175 million price tag associated with doing so could kill the bill.
