Consumers play it safe, spend gift cards on basics

Many Wal-Mart shoppers armed with holiday gift cards aren't spending them on iPods or DVD players -- they're stocking up on staples such as diapers and laundry detergent instead, the company reports. "Gift cards are being used as a secondary way to save," a managing director at a retail consulting firm said.
