For a variety of reasons, more consumers are opting to use debit cards rather than credit cards. Scott Talbott, senior vice president of government affairs at The Financial Services Roundtable, says the move is a reflection of consumers' desire to gain better control of their spending. "It's easy to demagogue the big credit card industry," Mr. Talbott said. "Credit and debit card services play a vital role in our economy. Seventy percent of our GDP is based on consumer purchases, and credit cards and debit cards make that easy, safe and fast."
