New federal agency to monitor, report on changing climate

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, announced the formation of the NOAA Climate Service to work alongside NOAA's National Weather Service and National Ocean Service. "More and more people are asking for more and more information about climate and how it's going to affect them," so the government is combining climate operations into one unit, Lubchenco said. If the agency receives congressional approval, it could begin operating by the end of the year, officials said.
