Veterinarian: Prevention is the best defense against heartworm disease

Cats, dogs and other pets are at risk of contracting heartworm disease, a mosquito-borne illness that can prove deadly if left untreated. Providing pets with routine heartworm preventive treatments is the best defense against the illness, writes veterinarian Jeff Kahler.
