Parenting programs may help prevent child obesity

Two parenting programs aimed at preventing behavior problems among poor, urban preschoolers reduced the risk of obesity in preadolescence, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. In the ParentCorps program, only 24% of children were obese by about age 8, compared with 54% of those not involved in the program, researchers said. They added that only 21% of girls in the other program called Incredible Years were obese by about age 10, compared with 39% in the control group.
