Pile-design decision delayed R.I. bridge project

Consternation over pile design for Rhode Island's Sakonnet River Bridge has delayed the project. Officials say they wanted to ensure they found the right design for the piles, which will be driven into extremely silty soil. The state Department of Transportation has spent more than $5 million deciding which piles were best, and determined that H-piles and pipe piles were best, after conducting what was New England's largest load-testing program.
