European debt, weak U.S. recovery pull Dow below 10,000

For the first time since November, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was below the symbolic 10,000 level when the trading day closed in New York. It marked the fourth, consecutive weekly decline for the index. Traders were responding to deepening concern about the feeble U.S. economic recovery and growing worries about the possibility that the governments of a few European Union countries with weak economies might default on their bonds.
