Google aims to enhance Gmail to take on Facebook

Google wants to explore the social-networking sector further through new features for Gmail. For example, Google plans to aggregate updates of Gmail users' contacts, creating a notification stream similar to those on Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, Facebook is working to upgrade its messaging service to compete with Internet-based e-mail systems, such as Gmail, according to TechCrunch.
