Intermodal service gains market share from long-haul truckers

U.S. freight shippers sent more of their loads by intermodal service -- choosing to pair short-haul trucking with long-haul rail -- than ever before in the fourth quarter. Intermodal lured 13.3% of the long-haul market for international and domestic containerized freight, setting a quarterly record, according to transportation consultants FTR Associates. "Intermodal has gained share for three consecutive quarters since the freight meltdown late last year," said senior FTR consultant Lawrence Gross.
