Down economy doesn't curtail pet spending

Even during the recession, spending on pets continued to increase. Americans spent about $50 billion on their pets in 2011, up 23% from 2007. Half of American households have pets, says APPA, and owners are spending on grooming and other salon treatments, higher-quality food and toys.
