Potential obesity treatment causes bone loss, studies find

The fibroblast growth factor 21, a compound that holds promise for obesity and diabetes, appeared to cause bone loss while burning fat, according to two studies in the journals Cell and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The data showed mice that were fed the compound lost 78% of their spongy bone over two weeks, compared with large gains in bone mass among mice that lacked the hormone.
