Meijer cuts 1,900 management jobs, to add 6,500 elsewhere

Grocery and merchandising chain Meijer has cut 1,900 management jobs in five states, the largest work force reduction in the company's 70-year history. The company will open five stores this year and eight in 2005, creating 6,500 jobs at new stores that are cheaper to build, have more efficient store formats and better operating procedures.
