Consumers can protect themselves from online identity theft

Accounts opened with stolen personal information on Web sites, such as eBay and Amazon, doubled in 2009 compared with the previous year. In addition, new accounts opened fraudulently on payment services such as eBay's PayPal increased 12%, according to a report released Wednesday by Javelin Strategy & Research. Mobile-phone accounts made up nearly a third of the bogus accounts opened in 2009.
