Taiwanese chipmakers shifting from DRAMs to NAND flash memories

As the PC DRAM market continues to struggle, chipmakers in Taiwan are turning to fabricating NAND flash memory devices as an alternative. Winbond Electronics has been developing NAND flash products for two years and plans to begin commercial production of the parts in the fourth quarter. It is following the lead of Macronix International, which is sampling its NAND flash memories at present and will soon go into volume production, DigiTimes reports, citing industry sources. Powerchip Technology has been making NAND flash memories since licensing technology from Renesas Electronics in 2005.
