San Francisco buildings need upgrade to endure quakes, mayor says

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has introduced legislation that would require upgrading certain types of buildings to make them resist damage from earthquakes. A majority of the city's Board of Supervisors backs the mayor's proposal. "We’ve been talking for years and years about doing something, and our voluntary retrofit program doesn’t seem to work for everyone because the work is not getting done," said Supervisor Scott Wiener, who co-sponsored the bill.
