Folate receptor imaging with SPECT/CT needs more work for ID of risky CV plaques

New research suggests that In-111 EC0800 SPECT/CT imaging could be used to detect cardiovascular plaques, but more work is needed to refine the method for differentiating high-risk plaques. The tracer binds to folate receptors, and the study tested whether binding to activated macrophages that are present near vulnerable plaques might lead to stronger uptake by those lesions. However, tracer uptake was higher in stable plaques, according to details published in Molecular Imaging. The researchers suggest that folate-based imaging that accounts for plaque size could help differentiate stable and vulnerable plaques.
