Economy gets boost with surge in trade deficit

In what is seen as another positive sign the economy is improving, the U.S. trade deficit grew to $40.18 billion in December -- its biggest trade gap in a year. The Commerce Department said the December deficit was 10.4% higher than in November and was better than expected by economists. Exports also rose 3.3% to $142.7 billion in December, capping eight consecutive months of growth.
